MATANCHÉN - LOST PARADISEBy Rita Carrington
Over the years, I have carried memories and dreams,
a kind of album of my life.
I wish I could keep them eternally, those years as a child;
but they all faded too soon.
I can still see
The wild runs on the beach,
the waves rolling on my feet
while picking up shells on the sand.
The school of fish boiling near the shore,
while, the fishermen pull their nets.
The swinging of the hammocks, and
the palm trees, dancing with the wind.
The tide, to come and go,
the clouds traveling from east to west,
the arrival of the boats to the Bay,
and the fishing tournament every May.
I can still hear
the whispering of the wind,
the chirping of the birds, and
the flapping of the seagull's wings.
I can still smell
the ocean breeze and the moist grounds,
the rich flavor of the tropical fruits,
the deep fried fish that we used to catch,
right there in your waters.
Oh! My dear Matanchén, how can I forget you?
If you saw me grow day by day,
gave me the peace and tranquility that as a child need it,
to make me, the way I am now.
In my eyes and in my heart,
there would not be a place like yours,
where I could run so freely like the wind, and
where I had the most wonderful years of my life.
Now that you have changed,
the people have moved to the city, leaving you isolated.
I will come back to you, looking for the peace I lost,
to end my days, and rest over your waters.
